Shalom friends,
Wishing you good health in this season and always.
Jewish tradition reminds us that treating our bodies well and doing what we can to preserve our well-being are ways that we honor our relationship with our Creator.
Back in the 12th
century, Maimonides, the remarkable rabbi, philosopher and
physician, taught that ‘one is obliged to refrain from all things
that impair the body and adopt those elements that strengthen it.’
He also gave us the idea that chicken soup can be used to promote health. He recommended the broth of hens and other fowl to “neutralize body constitution.” In his view, boiled chicken soup also had a part in curing leprosy and asthma - and could fatten you up - just like your Bubbie wanted.

Food writer and
critic Mimi Sheraton wrote that, “while no single culture can
claim it as exclusively its own, Jews and their goldene yoich
(golden broth) maintain a particularly close relationship….
Sometimes dubbed “Jewish Penicillin,” it is administered whenever
colds, heartbreaks, or any other physical or emotional ailments
strike.”
